Apple joins a growing list of companies cracking down on their employees’ use of ChatGPT

by admin

Apple has banned the use of artificial intelligence tools for some of its employees, becoming the latest major company to restrict the use of generative AI platforms in the workplace, over concerns that employees will reveal sensitive internal data.

Highlights

  • According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple has banned its employees from using ChatGPT and other AI-based services, such as Github’s Copilot, which helps developers write code.
  • The ban stems from concerns that the data-handling practices of these AI platforms — owned or financially supported by Apple rival Microsoft — could harm Apple’s software or Apple-owned software, the report adds, and other sensitive data.
  • Smartphone maker Samsung implemented a similar ban on ChatGPT and other AI tools earlier this month after it discovered an accidental leak of sensitive code by an engineer who had uploaded it to ChatGPT.
  • In January, Amazon banned its employees from sharing any confidential code or information with an OpenAI chatbot after discovering sample ChatGPT responses that resembled Amazon’s internal data.
  • In February, JPMorgan Chase severely restricted internal use of ChatGPT to avoid potential regulatory pitfalls of sharing sensitive financial information with a third-party platform.
  • Since then, other banks such as Bank of America, Citigroup, Deutsche Bank, Wells Fargo and Goldman Sachs have followed suit, banning the use of AI chatbots by employees.

Most of the companies that block the use of third-party AI tools are concerned about how services like ChatGPT and Google Bard share data storage with them on servers. Another complication is that most chatbots and AI services rely on user data to train their models and may accidentally feed other users proprietary data to the company without them being aware of it. Although ChatGPT provides users with a way to disable saving chat logs, this option is not enabled by default. It is also unclear whether deleting a conversation has any effect if the service has already used the conversation to train its models. In March, OpenAI had to shut down ChatGPT briefly to fix a bug that allowed some users to see parts of another user’s chat history.

While some companies are restricting the use of AI services in the workplace, several others have already started adding these tools to their workflows. Goldman Sachs — one of the banks that restricts employee use of ChatGPT — has revealed that it uses artificial intelligence tools to help developers write and test code. Management consulting firm Bain & Company announced earlier this year that it was integrating OpenAI’s generative tools into its management systems. Other companies have been optimistic about harnessing the power of AI, believing it could replace a large portion of their human workforce. On Thursday, BT said it plans to replace at least 10,000 workers — mostly those in customer service and network management — with AI-powered tools over the next decade. Earlier this month, IBM CEO Arvind Krishna said the company would stop hiring humans for jobs that could be filled by artificial intelligence.

to monitor

It should be noted that some companies’ bans on AI tools do not necessarily stem from broader concerns about AI itself, but rather how owners of third-party AI platforms such as OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft handle cross-proprietary data on these services. The magazine’s report notes that Apple is working on its own AI tools, under the guidance of former Google employee John Gianandrea. During Apple’s most recent earnings conference call, the company’s CEO, Tim Cook, said he believes “it’s very important to be deliberate and thoughtful in how you approach these things, but the potential is certainly very interesting.”
