Olivia and the Invisible Earthquake is an upcoming animated feature that recently received co-production support from Belgian Panique, Chilean Pájaro, and Academy Award-nominated Vivemant Lundi! and the Spanish group Terremoto AIE. The film is expected to be distributed in Spain by Filmax, while KMBO will handle its national release in France. Production is led by Terremoto AIE, which includes Citoplasmas Stop Motion Studio, Cornelius Films and Bígaro Films.
Directed by Irene Iborra, Olivia and the Invisible Earthquake is based on the children’s book “La pelicula de la vida” by Mate Carranza. The story revolves around 12-year-old Olivia as she navigates her turbulent life after her family is evicted from their apartment. Olivia conjures up a cinematic universe to protect her younger brother Tim from their harsh reality. The film has a budget of around €5 million ($5.45 million) and has received support from various Spanish entities, including RTVE, Televisió de Catalunya, À Punt, ICAA, ICEC, IVAC, Ibermedia and la city of Barcelona.
The co-producers plan to stabilize the film’s financial plan in 2023, and shooting is expected to begin in early 2024. Barcelona is the scenic backdrop for the film, with “Olivia and the Invisible Earthquake” set to premiere in Spain in the fall. 2025.
Add the Belgian panic! And Chilean Pájaro on the co-production team behind “Olivia and the Invisible Earthquake” adds even more variety to the project. The movie already has a strong team of co-producers, including Oscar-nominated Vivemant Monday! and the Spanish group Terremoto AIE.
Filmax will handle distribution in Spain, while KMBO will handle its national release in France. KMBO has recently achieved success with its strong box office performance in France for the movie “Amazing Maurice” and the current Ukrainian movie “Mavka: The Forest Song”.
Production is led by Terremoto AIE, which includes Citoplasmas Stop Motion Studio, Cornelius Films and Bígaro Films. The film is directed by Irene Iborra, and brings to life the children’s book “La pelicula de la vida” by Carranza. More than 24,000 copies of the book have been sold in Spain and have been translated into seven languages. Adding a touch of French talent, artist Morgan Navarro penned the character designs.
Jean-François Le Curie, With the Power of Two! Based in Rennes, the film is described as a mix between Ma vie de courgette and Ken Loach. The animation revolves around the young protagonist, 12-year-old Olivia, as she navigates her turbulent life after her family is evicted from her apartment.
