Le Bris, Ouattara, Moffi, Le Fée… behind the scenes of the great form of the Hakes

At the start of the season, FC Lorient surprised all of France by playing at the top of the Ligue 1 table when no one expected it. The opportunity to look back on this memorable performance of the Hakes.

Following its 16th place obtained last year, who would have thought that FC Lorient would play at the top of the table at the end of 2022? After the first 15 days of the championship, the Merlus have lost only 3 games and are in 5th place in Ligue 1. An exceptional start to the season for our Bretons who were rather expected to fight for maintenance.

Average start then six wins in a row

FC Lorient started the season with a fine victory against Stade Rennais (1–0) before conceding a frustrating draw against Toulouse (2–2). And while we thought the Merlus revived after their sluggish success against the promoted Clermont (2-1), they quickly fell back into their traps at Bollaert with a heavy defeat (2-5). After this big disappointment, the Lorient people went into steamroller mode.

Over the 6 matches that followed, Enzo Le Fée’s teammates had a string of victories, especially against high-level opponents. Carried by the Ouattara / Moffi duo, our Morbihannais brought down Lyon (3-1) and Nantes (3-2). And a few days later, it was LOSC who paid the price for the excellent form of the Bretons, despite being reduced to ten after the exclusion of Ouattara (2-1). At this point in the season, Régis Le Bris’ men were second in Ligue 1, just behind Paris Saint-Germain.

Watch out for losing shape

But the Lorientais seemed to slow down since in the last five games before the break, they did not win the slightest success. The doubt began to settle after the reception of Reims, reduced to ten at half-time which nevertheless obtained the draw at Moustoir (0-0). There followed three more delicate meetings against Troyes, Nice and PSG.

Against Les Troyens, Les Merlus came away with a disappointing draw (2–2) after dominating the game. Against OGC Nice and PSG, FC Lorient proved to be level before finally losing twice by the same score (2-1). Montassar Talbi and his partners are therefore down to 5th place at the time of the truce, but they can still fight for a place in European competition, which would be a first since their participation in the 2002 UEFA Cup.

Ouattara/Moffi, the winning duo

If the FCL has made such a start to the season, it is largely thanks to its attacking duo on fire. The young Dango Ouattara (20 years old) was the author of a prolific start to the season for his second year in the first team. The Burkinabé is involved in 10 goals in 14 games (5 goals and 5 assists). A real detonator for the team, he seems to fully flourish under the instructions of Régis Le Bris, coach who has revolutionized the Morbihan game since the start of the season.

But among the Lorientais, there is one who is even more talked about. Indeed, Terem Moffi is in direct competition with Kylian Mbappé and Neymar in the race for the title of top scorer in Ligue 1! With 10 goals this season, he is the third scorer in the championship. Only small downside, he has not yet sent the slightest decisive pass, but it must be said that this is not his main role. One thing is certain, the Nigerian will once again be essential in the second half of the season.
