Green transition: companies in the face of emergencies

by admin

It’s hard to ignore the climate emergency that weighs on us a little more every day. The entire community is involved, and in particular businesses, who also have this duty to make their operations and employees more responsible in addressing these challenges. Green skills (or green skills), which bring together all the skills that ensure the environmental sustainability of economic activities, is an example of this and its followers multiply.

After the digital transformation… make way for the green transformation

Deep changes, companies knew. However, the challenge that presents itself is the main challenge of the 21stThe tenth On a very different scale, because of its urgency and the difficulty of making all the necessary changes. A few years ago, digitization had already brought its share of disruptions and if the business did not adapt to it quickly, there would have been delays, but it was far from impossible. With a green shift, there really is no room for choice. We must act differently and consider the possibility that we will not be able to practice this or that profession if we do not do it responsibly.

At the legislative level, there are more and more coercive and incentive means, such as the law on the duty of vigilance, which make it possible to hold parent companies liable across the entire value chain in case of violation of human rights, fundamental freedoms, human health and safety and the environment. Companies are under pressure from all sides and especially from the new generations who are more stringent about misconduct in terms of environmental responsibility. There is a need to deliver on what was promised so as not to irrevocably damage the employer’s brand.

Green skills and careers are indeed essential

In many companies a clear business plan is born out of this urgency and focuses on skills, especially green skills. It is not just about professions dedicated to protecting the environment, but all the practices and attitudes that need to be adopted to change the way an individual does their profession. We will talk, for example, about the responsible purchasing policy of the marketing department or the environmental design of designers. As we can see, this fundamental trend is not limited to professions that are naturally associated with the climate emergency, but rather goes far beyond this framework and affects everyone. An obvious fact that you will have to quickly get used to in order to move in the right direction.

Internally, management will have to work to transform the human capital and put it on the right track. At the moment, some companies are already wondering about the professions of tomorrow and are therefore identifying skills to target those that will be needed in the near future and measuring their human capacity to power this green transformation. Depending on the first results and their availability, it will be easier to publish mobility or training plans or a customized recruitment strategy. In addition, “sustainable” academies or sustainability academies dedicated to increasing skills in these issues are developing rapidly in large groups (Schneider Electric, JLL, BNB, etc.).

In the same way that the IT department has taken a major role in digitization, the CSR department will follow a similar path with the green transition. Inevitably, you will work alongside HR to properly organize and deploy green skills internally. While some professions are a priority, such as the procurement job, which require collaboration with a large number of different partners around the world, most will follow an equivalent, albeit delayed development. Of course, the promise is good, but beware of greenwashing that could distort the importance of such a strategy.

A quantum leap to be integrated quickly

Taking the green skills path requires companies to invest time but also money in systems to properly train their employees to go beyond awareness programs limited to a climate mural or carbon footprint. We must act as quickly as possible. Whether it is in-house training programs or independent organizations, the ability to think about his or her job differently cannot do without adequate support, driven by the entire decision-making chain within the company. It is also important to work on your arguments in order to avoid making these changes seem like a limitation but more like an opportunity to give more meaning to your tasks.

However, if the demand for green skills will necessarily increase or even explode in the coming years, there is currently a talent shortage in this field, one more. Linkedin’s latest report on green skills shows that if supply is to catch up with demand, it will be necessary to significantly increase the density of green skills across many sectors. Currently, the field of business services is a much better student than health or finance. In any case, the deal is simple, and it will take a real collective effort by all sectors to achieve the climate goals.
