Ligue 1 will resume in a few days for Stade Rennais and the other French elite clubs. The opportunity to look back on the successful start to the season for the Rouge et Noir who are currently on the podium in the French Championship.

Committed to Ligue 1 and the Europa League, Rennes has obtained good results in each of the competitions. After a complicated start, however, the Bretilliens were able to pull themselves together and are now in 3rd place in Ligue 1. Thanks to several strong elements and the beautiful game put in place by Bruno Génésio, our Bretons can afford to dream of a beautiful European epic and qualification for the Champions League.

A delicate start to the championship…

Expected to be there after a successful exercise last year, the Rennais did not start the season at all as expected since they lost in their first match against FC Lorient. And in the five meetings that followed, the Bretons only managed to win twice against Ajaccio (2-1) and Brest (3-1). Defeated by Monaco, Lens or even Troyes, the Rouge et Noir failed to develop their game and made individual mistakes which were costly.

…before a long unbeaten streak

It was in mid-September that the start of the Stade Rennais season took an important turn. On their lawn at Roazhon Park, Bruno Génésio’s men delivered an exemplary performance against Auxerre by winning easily (5-0). It is on these bases that our Bretilliens went to the Vélodrome to obtain a good draw (1-1) which thus put an end to the series of five victories of the Marseillais. As a symbol of rebirth, the partners of Benjamin Bourigeaud then chained with five victories, including two against Lyon (3-2) and Nantes (3-0).

Opposed to Lille in early November, the Red and Black then managed to snatch a miraculous draw after suffering for almost the entire 90 minutes. Fortunately, the new Rennais Steve Mandanda was the author of a huge performance and several times saved his teammates. To recover before the break, Flavien Tait’s teammates had to win against Toulouse. They achieved this by mastering the encounter (2–1), which allowed them to extend their unbeaten streak to 11 games. After 15 days, our Bretons therefore rank in 3rd place in Ligue 1 with 31 points, closely followed by Marseille (30 points) and Lorient (28 points), the surprise of this start to the season.

Stade Rennais are undefeated in the Europa League

The Breton adventure in the Europa League began at the beginning of September. After their difficult start to the league (2 wins in 6 games), Hamari Traoré and his partners traveled to Cyprus to face AEK Larnaca. At the end of a dominated match, the Bretons snatched victory in the last seconds thanks to a fine achievement by young Lorenz Assignon (2-1). A week later, they received Fenerbahce and unfortunately experienced the opposite scenario by conceding the equalizer at the very end of the game (2-2).

Well launched in this group stage, Stade Rennais followed up with two victories against Dynamo kyiv (2–1 then 1–0) before obtaining the point of a draw against Fener and Larnaca. Undefeated in the Europa League, our Bretilliens however finished in second place in their group and will therefore face Chakhtior Donetsk in the round of 16 in February.
