The 16th day of National took place this Friday evening. If Stade Briochin snatched a success against Villefranche (1-0), US Concarneau had to settle for a single point after outrageously dominating Le Puy-en-Velay (0-0).
Defeated a few days ago to everyone’s surprise by Martigues (2-0), US Concarneau hosted Le Puy Foot, a team in great difficulty since the start of the season and which was in 16th place in the championship before the match. The opportunity to relaunch was therefore ideal for the Thoniers, still leaders of National, but who had lost ground to their pursuers in recent weeks. For its part, Stade Briochin, which was experiencing a recent resurgence, challenged Villefranche (12th) with the aim of securing a second victory.
Stade Briochin won at the end of the match
On both sides of the field, the two formations delivered a very timid first half on a frozen lawn. Amir Nouri and Hicham Benkaid nevertheless managed to energize the Briochin attack even if it encountered difficulties as they approached the last twenty meters from the Rhone. Opposite, Villefranche only very rarely worried the Costa Rican rearguard which exuded a certain form of insurance. When it was time to return to the locker room, everything still remained to be done (0-0). The Griffons then lowered the handbrake and Aimeric Gomis even benefited from two important chances around the hour mark. Stade Briochin then really took the upper hand over the visitors.
It was ultimately Hicham Benkaid who unblocked the situation with a header following a good cross from Julien Benhaim (1-0, 82nd). Already decisive in his first match in his new colors, the Franco-Moroccan offered his second victory to Saint-Brieuc thanks to this goal. A nice gift before the hour for all the supporters present at Fred-Aubert, who witnessed their team’s first success at home this season. Karim Mokeddem’s men confirm at the same time the progress seen in the last matches, but still remain in 17th place in the National. They are currently six points behind the first non-relegation player, AS Nancy.
So many regrets for US Concarneau
Dominating from the first to the last minute, the Thoniers failed to materialize their superiority against Puy-en-Velay (0–0). However, they quickly created interesting opportunities, but lacked realism in the end. The Finisteriens even benefited from a penalty after the quarter of an hour of play, unfortunately missed by Antoine Rabillard. Fahd El Khoumisti, who started for the first time in the starting eleven since his return, also had his chance on multiple occasions in the first half.
And on returning from the locker room, the physiognomy of the game was not reversed, quite the contrary. The Concarnois besieged the opposing defense while the strikes multiplied one after the other. But decidedly, when it does not want, it does not want. US Concarneau failed to shake the nets to deliver a stadium that was waiting for it. With this draw in the last game of the calendar year, the Thoniers retain their place as leader of the National, but only have a one-point lead over Versailles.
